New acta core team workers appointed

Two new Go North project workers have recently been appointed, and will start with the Company on Monday 2 November. Flora Toulson-Clarke is the new Go North Drama Worker, and will be delivering sessions with all four of the project youth theatre groups in Lawrence Weston and Avonmouth. Lucy Hunt is the Go North Project Support Worker, and will be supporting young people in their management of the project, and in their personal progression routes, including work towards youth arts awards.

Bedminster Youth Theatres

There are two youth theatres for young people in Bedminster - Vibe Youth Theatre for young people in South Bristol aged 12-19 years, and a new theatre group for year 4-6 children in Bedminster starting after Oct half term.

Vibe Youth Theatre

For young people living in South Bristol, aged 12 – 19 yrs.

Tuesdays, 5.00 – 7.00pm at acta centre, Bedminster

New Bedminster Youth Theatre

For local year 4-6 children

Tuesdays, 3.30-5.00pm at acta centre, Bedminster

Open Theatre Group – Monday Evenings

Adults and families are invited to join a brand new open theatre group at the acta Centre on Monday evenings. The first session begins on Monday 12th October, 7.00-8.30pm. All welcome!

Mini Magic Days – October and November

acta’s Saturday magic day events for children under 12 and their families are back for the Autumn term.

Mini magic days will take place at;

Sea Mills Community Hall on 10th Oct, 11.00am-1.00pm

Avonmouth Community Centre on 21st Nov, 11.00am-1.00pm

Expect fun with BIG painting walls, clay, den-building, music, dance and theatre as well as special activities for toddlers and babies in the baby-zone.

Events are free – all children and families in Kingsweston welcome.

OPA – Older People’s Arts

A series of weekly arts sessions for older people (aged 55 yrs+) funded by Linkage and Quartet.

acta’s Older People’s Arts (OPA) group have been touring their new puppet show for young children, On the Street. The show has already performed for two schools in Bedminster and for residents at Monica Wills Trust, and has further shows booked as follows:-

Thursday 26 November, Greater Bedminster Older People’s Forum & children from Ashton Vale Primary School

Tuesday 1 December, 11am at Luckwell Primary School.

The group is also looking for new members, so if you’d like to get involved please contact the acta centre, or simply come along to sessions on Tuesdays at acta, 10.00 – 12.00. In the Autumn term, the group will be creating a book for local children, to link with the On the Street show.

Youth theatre network secures funding

Two recent funding decisions have secured acta’s youth theatre network for the next three years.

The Go North project, funded by the young people’s fund of the BLF, and led by a steering group of youth theatre members, will deliver four youth theatres in the North of the City, including a new group in Lawrence Weston for older young people (16 – 25 yrs) and a new group for children in Avonmouth (10-11 yrs). The project also allows us to extend the work of the existing L-Dubbers and Ace youth theatre groups in Lawrence Weston, which secured funding from Bristol City Council earlier this year.

Our youth theatre network, which also includes groups based at the acta centre in Bedminster – Who Cares youth theatre groups for young carers across the City, aged 10-13 yrs & 14-19 yrs, and Vibe youth theatre for young people aged 12-19 yrs in Bedminster – will benefit further from additional funding from the Lankelly Chase Foundation, to extend the hours of the acta Senior Drama Worker, Ingrid Jones.

Upper Horfield, North Bristol

Following the success of the Sharing Memories project in 2008, including The Other Side of the Road community play, acta is currently developing a new project for local people this Autumn. There will be opportunities to get involved throughout October, including a range of workshops in half-term week, all leading to a community celebration on Saturday 7 November, in partnership with UHCT, who will be celebrating their 10th birthday!

‘Create and Make’ sessions will be at Eden Grove Hall on:

Monday 26th October-Friday 30th October, 10am-12pm and 1pm-3pm

All adults and families welcome (under 16’s must be accompanied by an adult).

Baring Foundation award core costs grant

acta is delighted to announce that Trustees of the Baring Foundation have recently awarded acta a three year core costs grant of £25,000 per year. Baring Foundation is keen to support acta’s plans to develop community theatre initiatives with refugees and asylum seekers in the City. The grant is particularly exciting for the Company, as it allows us to be flexible in our approach, as we develop our work with new communities in Bristol over the next three years.
